Navigating through Van Eyck’s exhibition in 360° VR with MSK Ghent

Introduction

The Museum of Fine Arts (MSK) in Ghent had worked for years on the largest Van Eyck exhibition ever. Shortly after the exhibition’s opening, the museum had to close its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To give visitors the chance to experience this unique exhibition, MSK sought a digital alternative. The development of this digital experience was handled by Poppr, who ensured the creation of an immersive and accessible virtual tour for visitors

Challenge

The challenge was to bring the story and masterpieces of Van Eyck digitally to the visitors. MSK wanted to create an immersive experience where people could virtually walk through the museum and zoom in on the various works. This required a user-friendly and visually appealing 360° VR experience.

Solution

Our team, along with Poppr, was enlisted to realize this digital experience. The first step was taking extensive photos of the paintings and museum rooms. Based on these photos, a 360° tour of the entire exhibition was created.

Our role was to make the VR experience user-friendly. We developed visual clickable elements allowing visitors to navigate from room to room, read more information about the paintings, or listen to the audio guide. The branding provided by the museum was seamlessly integrated into our designs.

Execution

For the design and development of the 360° tour, we used tools such as Unity and WebVR. Our team worked closely with Poppr to ensure the virtual tour was intuitive and appealing for all users. Regular check-ins with MSK ensured that the museum’s vision was followed and quickly adjusted based on feedback.
