Engie improves safety training efficiency with virtual reality simulations

Introduction

Engie, a major energy supplier, is continually expanding and faces the challenge of time-consuming training for new employees. To streamline this process, Engie opted for an immersive VR experience where employees can practice safety procedures virtually. The development of this VR training was handled by Poppr, who ensured the creation of a highly engaging and effective solution tailored to Engie’s needs.

Challenge

The VR safety training needed to not only engage employees in the training but also provide the organization with an objective view of their knowledge of the procedures. The virtual environment had to offer various realistic tasks and quizzes and alert employees to mistakes to create learning moments.

Solution

Together with our partner, we developed a 3D model and a VR application based on photos of the actual work environment. Our team focused on the graphical development of the VR environment. We integrated visual pointers, hands, and tools to help employees orient themselves in the virtual workspace. Additionally, error and pop-up messages ensured that employees better understood the situation and learned from their mistakes.

Execution

We used tools such as Unity to develop the VR environment and Blender to model 3D objects. The process began with gathering detailed photos of the workplace to create the most realistic virtual environment possible. Then, interactive elements were added to enhance the user experience.

The collaboration with Engie included regular testing sessions to gather feedback and make iterations. This allowed us to refine and optimize the VR experience.

Results

The Proof of Concept we developed is currently being tested internally by Engie. It provides a scalable foundation for further development of the platform and can be expanded with more simulations in the future. The initial feedback from employees was positive, with the VR training praised for its realism and interactivity.
